PrintNightmare: Why Patching and Policy Both Mattered
Microsoft issued out-of-band updates for CVE-2021-34527, known as PrintNightmare, in July 2021. It also told customers to review Point and Print registry settings because insecure configuration could undermine the protection expected after patching.
The incident is a durable example of why version compliance and secure configuration are separate control questions.
A patched host could retain unsafe policy
The Windows Print Spooler ran broadly, including on systems that did not need to print. Public discussion moved quickly, while administrators balanced emergency updates against printing compatibility and legacy policy.
Microsoft later changed default Point and Print behavior to require administrative privileges. That shift illustrated how secure defaults can remove recurring risk more effectively than relying on every organization to preserve a manual hardening choice.
Validate the effective control
Deploy current Windows security updates, review effective Group Policy and registry settings, and disable the spooler where it is not needed—especially on sensitive server roles. Test business printing before and after enforcement.
Monitor spooler-related processes, driver installation, and privileged behavior. Exceptions should state the business need, compensating controls, owner, and expiry date.
- A patch does not automatically correct insecure custom policy.
- Remove unnecessary services from high-value systems.
- Test policy at the endpoint, not only in the management console.
- Give compatibility exceptions an expiry.
Put the lesson into practice
- Apply supported Windows updates.
- Review Point and Print policy and registry state.
- Disable unnecessary spooler services.
- Test printing and monitor privileged driver activity.
- Revisit every exception after the secure default is available.
